Can severe damage to the brain or body cause symptoms of autism?
I'm writing a book and need to know how damaged a person can become after being subjected to torture. Sounds dark, I know, but it is important. One of the characters will be found in a basement after several months of abuse and torture. Experiments will have been done on him including work on his brain and spine. I want him to no longer be how he used to be. Different way of speaking, interpretation of the world, motor skills would be slightly off, things like that. I basically want him to be a high functioning Autistic. I just need to know if using the phrase 'symptoms of autism' would be accurate at all. I know the disease is, as of yet, idiopathic, but any information on accuracy would be helpful. I know this is a sensitive subject to some, but know it is a sensitive subject to me as well which is why I would like to write in a character like this. Just need to know if he can become this way or if he absolutely needs to start off this way.I'm certainly not saying torture would lead to autism. Sorry, I must clarify. I was thinking more on the lines of Autistic like symptoms due to brain damage or damage to the psyche. I'm still trying to work out the kinks in how this character will come up and what his back story is, so forgive me if it's not a clear picture.
Can you have just some of the symptoms of autism?
such as swinging your arms, back and forth movement of the body, keeping to yourself etc. This person is a young adult, intelligent but asocial
Do I have symptoms of autism?
All throughout my life I have been very unstable. I had a hard time getting to school, and in first grade I failed because I could not pay attention, understand, and I would cry constantly. I learned to live a long but it is hard for me to communicate. People always tell me I look so mad or sad when I'm perfectly fine. When people come over I usually hide. I don't like to talk at all to anyone. I have stuttering problems and a hard time expressing myself. I get panic attacks over it because I am so alone. I am almost 20 years old now with no stable job or very close relashions. Ive never dated because I cannot handle being around others like that. I have major mood swings. Now I'm lost at what to do in my life.I have been to many doctors and have had therapy and taken medications. I was diagnosed with depression and axiety attacks my mother has that, adhd, and bipolar. my father has adhd the medications have never worked and made me even more sick. I refuse to take them now. They also made me overweight. Is there any hope for my life if it isn't autism? My dream is to make a lot of money so I can own a barn house and have horses or animals since I get a long with them well. I als o want to be a flight attendant, but with no communication skills? I don't think so. I think my best bet so far is the grave. I don't know if I can handle the next 50 years or so on disability like my mom offered. I don't want that.If I am not stable emotionally or just flat out unstable, how is it possible to reach any dreams? I have no money to help myself. I feel so cynical all the time. I don't know what to do with myself than watch everyone live their own lives. I don't want to even live.

Symptoms of autism? Or maybe a similar disorder?
My 8 year old brother is very intelligent, and doesn't seem to be socially challenged at all. He's into sports, art, music everything. But he seems to have a very strange fixation with inanimate objects. For example, he always always ALWAYS has to have something with him. Whether it's a rock, or a guitar pick, or a paper clip. He always has to have small things in his pocket. Furthermore, he is extremely attached to one larger object at a time. A few weeks ago it was a monkey he made at Build A Bear. He would not leave the house without him, absolutely refused. After that it was a toy dinosaur, and today's object is a Styrofoam block. He gets quite upset if anyone suggests he leave it at home or in the car. Is this normal, or could this be a sign of something more serious?
Is a "phobia" of touching certain textures a symptom of autism?
Ack just writing about this is giving me goosebumps. There are certain textures I cannot STAND to touch, and it's only gotten worse over time. It started with those holographic notebooks, the ones that have the ridges on them that look like one the when you hold it at a certain angle, and something else at another. I cannot touch them, it makes me shudder. Just the sound of someone scratching them bothers me. Now it's gotten to where almost anything with a semi rough, semi smooth texture bothers me. My new laptop, for instance, has an almost smooth mouse pad on it. The slightly rough texture bothers me every time I touch it. Could it be mild autism? That's what someone suggested. I've also heard it could be ocd.
Are these Symptoms of Autism or OCD?
Touching ear to the pillow 3 times before going to sleep. Anwering machine must be left on an odd number. Must kiss 3 times not 2. and sometimes needs to count an odd number of steps to the door before leaving a room.No its not me, its someone I know. And really like. I want to help. He does seem to have trouble in social situations and was diagnosed with adult ADHD but i disagree and want to get him off the ritalin.
Sudden symptoms of Autism?
OKay, well I am a teenager. As a kid, i didn't talk until 4 years old. I threw many many tantrums, but that is normal. Anyway, within the last year I have become more and more reclusive. now all I do is lock myself in my room, coming out to do nessecities, like eat, drink, and hygine. I went shopping with my mom today and hated it. I picked out only two majorly soft shirts. Other than that, and school, i havn't gotten out within the last week. I'm loosing touch with my friends, except for a certain few. I play my music loud, so i drown myself out from the world. I never talk to others, and I'm developing a 'mute' stage. So is it possible to develop Autism, or it to show itself later in life?Sorry, my friend said i could have Autism. And I do literally try to get outside, but I physically can't. I can not force myself outside, unless i have to.sorry, i didn't mean to offend anybody.
Symptoms of autism?
I baby sit a 3 year old who is very antisocial, prefers to play alone, doesn't seem to understand what is being said to him most of the time, avoids eye contact most of the time but not always, and is just generally naughty. He takes toys, throws fits and doesn't listen to or follow rules. His speech is also very slow and drawn out. Does this sound like autism, or is this child just spoiled and underdeveloped??He had a speech therapist but is not longer doing it, the therapist said his speech was fine. He seems to play with toys appropriately, he doesn't just focus on parts of the toys. There are just a lot of other " symptoms" .
