Question: I am freaking out ! is my son showing signs of autism?
(Posted by: art_life_1987 on 2008-09-09 21:17:10)
So I read some things about autism and wondering if he is showing some of the sign, like spinning only to music, but not for long just a second and maybe once a week. Climbing everywhere. And the worst sign of them all that I just recently saw was him lining up things in a row. Like pencils. There are other things that I read about like not making any eye contact, but he does make eye contact and smiles alot and laughs , sometimes he would hit me though if he didn't like something or didn't get it his way. So I just want to see some opinions and maybe I should take him to a doctor and see if he has something , because he is also very hiper . I am just a young mother that is worried, and very concerned. oh he is 21 months old |

How old is he? being hyper is a normal sign of a boy. and climbing all over everything seems to be a trade mark as well. from what you desribe it sounds more like either a normal little boy or possible he has ADD OR ADHD. does he seem to not be able to concentrate for very long. like does he easily get bored with things even like watching a movie. or usually quickly goes from one activity to another. those are signs of add and adhd. i have a feeling he is just a boy being a boy and there is nothing to worry about but at his next check up you could ask the doctor what he/ she thinks. |

Autistic children stand out as different. I don't think you would be just wondering if he was autistic, you would know there was something wrong. Ordering things is something all children do to some degree. Being hyper isn't necessarily a sign of autism either. Autistic children have all or most of the symptoms, all or most of the time. Being in their own world and unaware of others around them is a real issue, and many of these children almost never make eye contact, not just once in awhile. I'm sure someone with an Autistic child will answer your question with much more concrete answers then I have given you. If you are really concerned then take him to your doctor for a professional opinion. Good luck to you. |

Sounds to me that you have a perfectly normal child, every child throws a little temper tantrum and strikes out, every child loves to climb, anything to get themselves off the floor, do not worry, none of those "symptoms " sound irregular. |

My sister is autistic, and i know that when she was younger she never played like a normal child does. Just because your child is lining things up, not making eye contact, etc. doesnt mean that your child is autistic. How old is he? Possibly try just sitting down with him and do a little bonding. The normal age i think that you usually find out if they are autistic is at 2 or 3. Not all autistic children are the same, but looking back at old tapes, my sister couldn't talk or do much on her own, she always was concentrated on one thing at a time. I would maybe consider taking him to the doctor, but I wouldnt worry much, because sometimes thats just how kids act at that age. Try seeing if your child ever acts differently then the way other kids do around him, and if theres not a huge difference, don't worry about a thing. To me it sounds like he is completely fine though, there is nothing wrong for a child to be hyper, they all have a wild side. |

My son is autistic. Climbing everywhere? I know a lot of typical boys do this, but this is one of the first symptoms my son had. Spinning, just a little bid, he did that too. Super hyper...that too. He also was happy, and had good eye contact. Does he understand you when you speak or have any language himself? I would listen to your mommy intuition. Everyone told me my son was fine. He appeared to be to everyone. It REALLY bothers me when people say "you would be able to tell if your son was autistic " it isn't true. Especially when they are young. They often have very subtle symptoms. I am glad I caught it early and got him into early intervention. Otherwise he wouldn't be where he is today! Check it out. It won't hurt |

I have some experience with autism in my family. Based on what you have written here, it does not appear that there's anything to worry about at this time. Boys are often just very active. |

As a mother of 2 children with autism, and 2 children without autism, and based on your description of your son, sounds to me like he is NOT AUTISTIC.. Relax and enjoy your precious boy! |

Honestly, the best thing you can do is take him to the doctor and ask for an Autism screening (like the MCHAT). It does not take very long and can give the pediatrician an idea on whether he should have further evaluations or not. It is NEVER to early to look in to the possibilities, the earlier the better! Please let me know if you have any other questions. Jennifer |
