Do autistic children have trouble learning basic independence/survival lessons?
I have a sibling about 8 years old with mild autism and I've been thinking, do kids with autism have a lot of difficulty learning survival lessons? As in, they do something and the result is pain bodily harm, but they keep repeating the action resulting in the same consequence. I have a Moyen poodle Bichon Frise mix dog being trained for her aggression territory behavior problems, and my autistic sib keeps repeating actions like running, screaming, kicking, etc that result in harm to her or both. Like the most recent and repeated her coming over and trying to touch the dog's face grab the dog, no matter how many times we all tell her not to do it or she gets bitten, nothing is learned.I witnessed her yank the dog's bone away while the dog was still chewing on it, and the dog automatically jumped up and attacked her arm, barking and doing the whole nine yards of Back Off body language. Unbelievably, my sib just lurched back and laughed loudly with a grin on her face. She repeated this action for some several times, and my dog's response was stronger sharper every time. I don't understand, isn't there something that says " Don't do that again, you'll get hurt" to her? I make it very clearly hourly that my dog is undergoing training and will bite, no one listens. The kid has been bitten scratched before to bleeding point but there's nothing being learned she feels pain, she just doesn't get any further than that? The detail of an autistic kid and a potentially dangerous dog isn't really the point here my parents let the child and dog be together because they believe the child is smart enough and the dog is too gentle natured to go full Cujo on anyone. I'd like an answer to my Original question before there's anything to say of that, please.

Is the number of autistic children going up or has it always been about the same?
I was born in the late fifties, and I know there was a lot of children born with defects due to thalidamide and women not taking vitamins, but to me it seems as if everywhere I look I am hearing about more and more children with autism, like my nephews who were conceived invitro and I wonder if that had something to do with it or maybe because the mother was almost 40?

Parents with older autistic children can you shed some light on this please?
my son was diagnosed with aspergers at 2 nd a half years old. he is now 12 and in a special school which he loves. I have done all the courses early bird etc read all the books possible and spent a very tiring but wonderful 12 years raising my lovely boy but ... i am not convinced he just has aspergers i spoke to one specialist who said aspergers does not create a significant delay in physical development which my son had. he couldn't sit til 1 year old walked at 2 didn't speak till 3 and then it was not normal speech but echolalia. he was not toilet trained till he was 6 even though we started at 18months old. He does show signs of aspergers ie obsessive interest in only one thing and repetitive behaviour could go on etc but he also has signs of typical autism he is several years behind other children his age in behaviour and academically. does anyone have any experience in this ? also since his specialist left we haven't been given a new one and that was 3 years ago if i need to see anyone for him i have to go cap in hand to the gp for referrals. I would just like some advice so i can give him the best possible start. Many thanks in advance please dont answer if you dont have anything productive about autism to say.

Does anyone know anything about the GFCF(gluten free casein free) diet and why it helps autistic children?
My son is almost 3 and is autistic. He has been having problems going poop for about 1 1 2 months. He has an appointment to GI specialist, but it's not until May 14, 2010. He has all the symptoms of someone who has an intolerance to gluten except diarrhea. I have been reading about the GFCF diet and how it can help with autism and some of these GI problems my son has. The diet is so restrictive , I feel like he can't eat anything. Is there anyone who has an autistic child and does NOT have their child on a GFCF diet? If so, has your child progressed in his her speech and social skills? Also, I would like to hear from the parents how do have their child on a GFCF diet, and the results of it. Thanks everyone, I really could use any valuable information on food and autism.real answers please, and this is a special diet, not for weight loss.

Have any of you tried the GFCF (Gluten Free Casein Free) diet with your autistic child?
I have been reading Jenny McCarthy's book about autism and mentioned helping cure her son through the GFCF diet. I am wondering if anyone has tried this with their own autistic children and if you saw improvement? My son has not been diagnosed with autism but does have a speech delay and working with early intervention. Of course I'm worried about autism because of the speech delay and willing to try anything....even this diet if it will help his speech improve thanks for any information for or against this idea of the GFCF diet
