Do autism spectrum disorders affect one's intellectual capacity?
I don't know all that much about autism, so I'm sorry if this question is offensive in its ignorance. But does autism or any of the related spectrum disorders adversely affect a person's intellectual capacity? There's a kid in my neighborhood that I see from time to time, and I know he's autistic from talking to his mom in passing. I don't want to judge or pry or anything, I'm just curious... and figured I'd ask here instead of offending someone.Anyway, the kid in my neighborhood is nonverbal, but I know being nonverbal doesn't mean that someone has a diminished intellectual capacity. He may actually be quite intelligent, I have no idea, he just doesn't like loud noises and loves the color blue, is all I know. So, generally speaking, do people with autism spectrum disorders have an unusually low or high intelligence?

Possible autism spectrum disorder?
When I was younger, I was very odd, very anti social, highly intelligent and did weird things. I had an impulsive obsessions I don't even want to mention for like 10 years, I wet the bed for a very long time, I openly picked my nose, I walked around on my heels almost all the time and I would mouth words after I said them without even realizing it. I got anxiety in social situations and pretty much avoided friends. This has all ceased, but since my son is now on a waiting list to be evaluated for autism, I can't help but wonder if maybe I had an undiagnosed mild form of it? They say you can live a pretty normal life with mild forms, which I do. I still avoid people, and have anxiety, and consider myself " odd." but I am by no means as weird as I was when I was a kid. Anybody with an autism spectrum disorder, or knowlegable in the field think that it is possible, or even hereditary?

Is Autism Spectrum Disorder really Autism??
Hi. My husband has a 7 year old boy from a previous marriage. We want to help and be involved as much as possible. So far his ex wife has only allowed us to speak to the social worker. We have yet to speak to a doctor or see any documentation. The child does not seem to diplay autism features at all. She keeps asking for more money, because she says he has " autism" . And wants us to pay her to have a full time nanny. We offered to cover the child under our insurance, and she refused. I just want to know if he has Autism or is it easy for kids to be diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. We want to help, but we don't want to be taken advantage of. Thank you...
